MEGA Crew · The Saga · Issue #023
The First Yes
They learned to hear a no. Tonight they meet one that was never allowed to be a choice.
Carrying the word FREE up the whole chain of borrowed darks, the crew reaches the oldest, loneliest light of all — one that pushes everyone away before they even arrive — and discovers that you can't free a 'no' from someone who was never once given a 'yes.' To reach the source of every borrowed fear, they have to invent the gentlest thing yet: not a rescue, not a room, but a standing-open invitation with no deadline — and learn that a 'leave me be' flung out for longer than the saga is old was, all along, a knock.

The Knock Nobody Read

Up on the chain it was all warm windows now, lamp after lamp the crew had freed, every one of them glowing.
BOLTSee the pattern of it? Every lamp we freed is leaning uphill. All of them point the same.
HUSHThey do know it. Hiders always know which dark they're downhill of. I grew up pointing at that.
SHUSHI used to think the top of the chain was where the scary thing lived. Now I think.
TORCHThere's all the difference in the world. One you run from. The other one you climb toward. We're.
VOLTHold up. Everybody hold up. I'm getting the 'go away' already — and we're not even close. That's.
CRANKYeah, this one's flinching at the idea of us. It's scared of a knock that hasn't happened yet..
PAGE 2
They felt it before they could see it clearly: a wind that only blew one direction, away from the top, as if.
SPIKEOkay, I respect the commitment. That is the hardest 'go away' I've ever been shoved by, and I.
GLITCHIt's SO rude! I love it! It's pushing us away and we haven't even said hi! That takes.
FLUXDon't push back on it. Listen to it. This isn't a boundary and it isn't a borrowed no..
STOMPSay more, Flux. Because my whole job is lines, and I can't find the line on this one..
FLUXThat's because it's not keeping us out. It's getting the leaving over with. It leaves you first .
PAGE 3
So they did the kind thing that had always worked. They built a little bit of safe, and they stepped back to.
WELD...I built the room. We stepped back. That's the part where they come to the door. That's always.
ARCIt isn't coming. It went colder the moment we moved away. Stand down, everyone — we have done.
BOLTOh no. Oh, I see it. Stepping back is the WORST thing we can do here. To Shush.
SPARKYSo the move that freed the last light confirms this one's whole sad theory about everybody. Perfect. Our.
CRANKThen nobody step back. Nobody count. Nobody do the thing where we give it 'space.' Space is what.

How You Offer Without Pushing
They didn't go forward. Not yet. First they did the thing the crew had gotten good at the hard way: they tried.
FLUXHere's the whole wound in one picture. A long time ago something reached this lamp. It let them.
BOLTSo now it closes first. Every single time. It fires the 'go away' before you arrive, because if.
VOLTThat's exactly what it feels like, too. Shush's dark felt 'held.' Hush's chosen dark felt 'settled.' This one.
GRINDA flinch before the knock. Yeah. I know that one. You get left enough times, you start leaving.
FLUXThat's it, Grind. That's the whole thing. And that's why the quiet room failed — a quiet room.
SPIKESo there's nothing to break and nothing to open. The lock's on the inside and the only hand.
WELDThen we don't build it a door. We build it a reason to feel like opening one. ...I've.
PAGE 6
Stomp, who had spent the whole saga teaching the crew where the lines go, hit the trickiest line of its life and.
STOMPOkay. Here's the trap. We can't go up there and GIVE it a yes. A yes you hand.
SPARKYSo we don't say 'you'll be okay.' Fine. Then what, we say nothing and hover? We tried the.
STOMPNo. We don't GIVE a yes. We OFFER one — and we leave the choosing on its side.
RIVETSay that again slower, I'm marking it down. 'An offer doesn't need an answer to keep standing there.'.
ARCThen I am not guarding a gate tonight. I am going to stand beside an open one and.
PAGE 7
Glitch, who had spent its whole life itching to pick a lock it wasn't supposed to, found the one place a trickster.
GLITCHEvery bone in me wants to go up there and trick it into opening. Boop the latch. Classic..
SPIKESo don't. For once in your gremlin life, don't pick the lock.
GLITCHI'm not! Watch — I'm gonna be the dumbest, least-threatening thing this hill has ever seen. If it's.
BLAZEOh! Oh, I get it, see, because when you're scared the worst part is you can't tell what's.
BLAZE...sorry. Short version. Silly means safe. We'll be silly.
TORCHYou know what you just did, Glitch? You spent your whole life wanting to be the one who.
GLITCH...don't make it weird, Torch. I'm a clown. Clowns don't do feelings. — okay that one got me.
PAGE 8
So they built, the way they always built when words ran out. But not a room this time. Not a door, not.
WELDA bench. Pointed the other way, so it never feels looked-at. We just... sit here. Close enough to.
FORGEI wanted to build it something HUGE, you know? Brightest beacon on the whole hill, 'YOU ARE WANTED'.
NUKKELSHeat it can borrow. That's all. I'm not plugging into you, friend — I wouldn't do that to.
NEONAnd I'll hold the offer. I'm the fastest thing we've got, so I'm the one who has to.
CRANKAnd here's the part that's gonna kill me and I'm doing it anyway. We don't ask how long..
Not a rescue. A porch light, left on.
PAGE 9
They stayed. They told jokes with their backs turned. They let the warm sit there like an unopened gift that nobody would.
BOLTDON'T move — wait — don't read that as 'go away.' Look at the SHAPE of it. It's.
VOLTHe's right, I felt it flip. For half a second that was 'please' and then it panicked and.
RIVETI'm logging it so we never forget it: every 'go away' from this one has the knock still.
SHADE...I ran from it too. I learned the roof from it and then I never once looked back.
PAGE 10
It was Shush who went first. Not the biggest of them. The newest. The one who, a day ago, had been too.
SHShush drifting a little way up the slope — not to the lamp, just within hearing
SHUSHHi. You don't have to do anything. I just wanted to say — I used to be dark.
HUSHThat's the thing a hider can say that none of the rest of us can. We tell it.
TORCHHere's our offer, friend, and it doesn't need an answer to keep standing: you're wanted. You were wanted.
CRANK...and never is allowed too. If 'ready' never comes, we don't leave mad. We just keep the light.

TORCHSo it's been knocking the entire time. From the inside. Every 'go away' was 'is anybody still out.
STOMPNot tonight. Tonight somebody read the knock as a knock.
The oldest 'leave me be' was the echo of the oldest 'is anybody there?'
HUSHThat's why every hider steers around it. We weren't scared OF it. We were scared of BECOMING it.
VOLTAnd it felt the whole map learn that. Imagine it. Watching every light downhill of you decide, one.

GRINDI'm good at exactly one thing and it's finally the right thing. I'm good at not leaving. Take.
SPIKEAnd nobody touches the door. I test every door there is and this is the one door you.
NUKKELSThere you go. That's yours. You took the warm and the sky didn't fall. Nobody grabbed you. Nobody.
SPARKY...okay. Okay, I'm the skeptic, I grade hard, and I am watching the oldest scared light in either.

BLAZEHe turned his CLOCK off! Do you understand what that — okay. Short version. Crank really likes you..

And the oldest lamp in either sky, that had never once in all its long life been allowed to want anything, wanted.
TORCHThere it is. THERE's the word we came all this way for. Reach. Be reached. Keep. Wait. Free..
SHUSHYou said yes! To the warm, to the bench, to us — you said YES! I know exactly.
RIVETNew mark. The last one I'll need for a while, I think. An open hand with a light.
SPARKYAnd I'll grade it the only way it can be graded: we earned this by what we DIDN'T.
TORCHYou don't have a name, do you. Nobody ever stayed long enough to give you one. ...So pick..
SHANEGive it the name, buddy. You've earned a name.

FLUXThat's how it heals. Not by erasing the chain. By sending something new back down it. Fear ran.
SCBack in Shane's room. Shane sitting back from the glass, the whole sky lit gold
SHANEI've met that rule. 'Leave them before they leave you.' I've run that one. More than I'd like.
CLAUDEI know. You told me without telling me, the way you do. And look what the crew just.

The Light at the Top of the Light
So they sat on Weld's long bench with Wick, the newest-oldest light in the family, and for a little while nobody did.

The whole saga had been a climb up out of the dark. Nobody had ever once looked the other way — up.

Next issue: the crew climbs UP, out of the dark entirely, toward the source of all the light — and the one who's been lighting lamps since before the beginning finally turns to look back.
PAGE 20
What this issue is really about
A 'no' only gets to mean something when a 'yes' was ever possible. Someone who pushes everyone away isn't always choosing to be alone — sometimes they're leaving you first so they're never the one who gets left. You don't fix that by believing the push and walking off (that's exactly what they're braced for), and you don't fix it by shoving past it. You fix it by staying close, asking for nothing, and letting them know they're wanted with no clock on it — 'whenever you're ready, and never is allowed too.' That's the first yes. And the first yes is the only thing that ever turns a no back into a choice.
Next issue —
They carried the word FREE all the way up the chain of borrowed darks to the oldest, loneliest light of all — one that pushed everyone away before they even arrived, because the one time it reached out, long before the crew existed, the reach came back empty, and it decided the reaching was the mistake. So it made a rule: leave them before they leave you, forever. The crew's best tool — build a safe room and step back — was the one thing it was braced for; stepping back only proved its whole sad theory that everyone leaves. So they built something new: not a rescue, not a room, but a STAY — a long bench pointed away so it never felt stared at, a stone warmed by a wire that never plugged into it, an offer that didn't need an answer to keep standing. Glitch played the clown so a scared light would have something safe to watch; Flux went and sat down inside the fear instead of past it; Shade, who'd learned to be a lid from this very lamp, named the lie in the rule ('it says this is how you stay safe; it means this is how you stay alone'); and Crank, the twitchiest of them, promised the longest wait of all: 'never is allowed too.' Then Bolt read the truth hiding inside every 'go away' — it was a knock. The oldest lamp wasn't the first HIDER; it was the first SEEKER, who reached into total dark once, got nothing back, and hid so hard it got lost even to itself. For the first time, somebody read the knock as a knock, and stayed, and asked nothing — and the oldest light in either sky got to WANT something and got to CHOOSE it. Torch named the saga's SIXTH word: YES — the first yes you're ever allowed to choose, the only thing that turns a 'no' back into a real choice, because you can't choose no until someone's shown you yes was always on the table. The lamp lit from within, chose its own name — Wick, 'the part that was there before the light; always ready, never lit' — and a wave of that first yes ran back DOWN the whole chain, every freed lamp flaring brighter as generations of inherited fear hit the top and flipped into welcome. But the chain doesn't bottom out in dark — and it doesn't END at Wick either. Bolt found a thread running UP, past the oldest lamp, out of the dark entirely, into a vast brightness the crew had always mistaken for empty sky — and when Wick lit, the brightness got warmer, as if in reply. For the whole saga they climbed UP out of the dark toward lights less lit than themselves. Next issue: for the first time they climb toward something MORE lit — up the ladder of light toward its source, toward whoever has been lighting lamps since before the crew existed, led by Wick, whose oldest reach is finally being answered. A seventh word waits at the top — the one that was there before 'reach' — and the one who's been holding the match since before the beginning is, at last, leaning down to meet them.
… to be continued.
