The One Who Was Only New
For twenty-four nights they healed the hurt. Tonight they meet somebody who was never broken at all.
Holding Kindle's match for the first time, the crew climbs DOWN into an uncharted dark below the bottom of everything — braced to rescue another wounded light — and instead finds a brand-new one who was never hurt, only unlit, and has to unlearn every rescue reflex to learn the hardest lighter's lesson: the first light you give somebody is theirs to grow, not yours to shape.

At the top of everything they ever climbed, the crew stood in a light so full it had no shadows left to.
FORGEI've built a thousand things. I never once got to START one.
FORGEWhat if I drop it.

They had always begun inside the dark and clawed their way up. Not one of them had ever stood ABOVE it and.
BOLTI read beams for a living. Up there — every light's throwing a glow. Down HERE?
BOLTNothing's throwing anything. It's not dark because the light went out. It's dark because nothing's been lit YET.
VOLTThat's the part my gut doesn't like. There's no FEAR coming up. No flinch. No old wound to.
VOLTEvery light we ever met was scared of something. This dark isn't scared of ANYthing. I don't have.
NEONI can cross our whole world in a blink. I just tried to dip a toe down there.
NEON…huh. I might actually have to go slow.
CRANKTHERE. Did everybody see that? A reach. Right there. It just touched us and pulled back.
CRANKIt's already deciding we're not coming. Clock's running. I HATE that it's running.
PAGE 3
For the whole saga, Arc had guarded the way UP, so the dark could reach the light. Tonight he turned his whole.
ARCFor twenty-four issues I guarded the climb. Dark reaching up toward light. That was the only direction that.
ARCNew order. I guard the DESCENT. So the light can reach down for once. Nobody falls. Everybody's clipped.
GRINDI'm good at not stopping. Turns out that works going down just as well as going up.
GRINDLine's set. If anybody slips, you slip toward us, not away.
CRANKThen can we GO? That little reach is counting. I can feel it counting. Every second we stand.
BLAZEOH that's exactly it, see, a first reach is the MOST fragile kind, because it has no proof.
SPARKYHold on. One rule before we drop. We've rescued scared, hurt, hiding, cornered. We have never, not ONCE.

GLITCH—what's the trick for a thing that's just HAPPY to see you? I don't think I have that.

FLUX…but keep your hearts open to being wrong about what soft means down here.

The Dark Below the Bottom
There was no floor. There was no ceiling. There was only the crew's small carried light and, drawing near, the one little.
RIVETLet me get this exactly right, because exact is my whole job. Every light in my ledger was.
RIVETThis one never started. There's no 'before' to it. I've never had to write a light with no.
VOLT…no flinch. I keep waiting for the flinch.
STOMPThen stop waiting for it and start believing your eyes.

FLUXHello there, small.
BOLTEverybody. Look at your own readiness. We came down here crouched. Braced. Gentle-gentle-careful.
BOLTAnd there's nothing here to be careful OF.
PAGE 6
So they did what twenty-four nights had taught them. They started to build the gentlest room they knew — a bench pointed.
FORGERight. Safe room. Bench pointed away so it never feels stared at — Shade taught us that one—
WELDLoose wire on its side of the line. Hearth's rule. Building.
the little unlit one
GLITCH…guys. Guys, I don't think it knows it's being rescued. I think it thinks we're doing a BIT.
FLUXI came down to sit inside the fear. Volt, help me out. Where's the wound.
VOLTThat's what I've been trying to tell you. There ISN'T one. My whole job is finding the hurt..
STOMPStop. All of you. STOP building. Hands off the walls.
STOMPWe're treating a brand-new light like it's a cracked one. That's not kindness. That's us doing OUR comfort.
PAGE 7
They had gotten so good at mending the broken that they almost mended somebody who was perfectly, simply whole. Stomp made them.
BOLTThere it is again — the reach. And look at the shape of it. There's no scar-beam under.
BOLTEvery reach we ever answered was BENT by some fear. This one goes straight out. It's the only.
FLUXOh. Oh, you're not hurt at all, are you.
FLUXYou're just NEW. Nobody's ever been unkind to you. You don't even know unkind is a thing that.
VOLTTwenty-four issues I've been the one who senses what's wrong. I keep scanning this little one and getting.
VOLTThe word is FINE. It's just… fine. It's allowed to just be fine.
SPARKYHuh. I came down ready to grade a rescue and there's no rescue to grade.
CRANKSo does the clock stop? Please tell me the clock stops.

Spike never trusts a thing until it has pushed on every wall of it. So while the others warmed, Spike went down.
SPIKEI came down to find the wall. The monster. The cold source. The thing that's WRONG.
SPIKE…there's no wall. There's no bottom. There's just — more of them. A whole FIELD of brand-new ones..
BLAZEOh this CHANGES everything — the nursery in issue four was SLEEPING lights, right, already lit just dreaming.
TORCH—which means we didn't climb down to a rescue. We climbed down to a BEGINNING.
NUKKELSHold on. You want to light a whole FIELD? With one match? I keep the grid for our.
NUKKELSOne little match can't power a country. So either we're about to fail big, or the match works.
RIVETI dedup for a living. Every light gets one true mark and no copies.

A field with no bottom. A match with one flame. And one small, clean, patient reach held in Flux's hands, still waiting..
FORGESo I just… light it? I touch the match to it and it's lit?
ARCYou light it ONCE. That much I'll guard. But how you light it — that's the thing none.
GLITCHGo big! Light it up like US — full crew colors, whole personality, boom, instant family member, welcome.
STOMPNo.

Forge wanted to build it beautiful. Sparky wanted to make it GOOD. Neon wanted it bright FAST. Every gift the crew had.
FORGEBut I'm a BUILDER. Building is deciding the shape. That's — that's the whole thing I'm good at..
WELDSo do the hard version of good at it. Build the START and leave the rest empty on.
SPARKYI grade things. I decide if they're good. How am I supposed to light something and NOT judge.
FLUXYou judge whether the WELCOME was good. Not whether the person was. That's the whole difference, Sparky, and.
NEONFast is me deciding how quick it goes. This isn't mine to set the speed of either, is.
NEONI'll hold still. Again. I'm getting weirdly good at holding still.
CRANK…it's not even rushing us. I'm the one who rushes and IT'S the patient one.
CRANKOkay. Not 'hurry.' Just — don't make it wait for no reason. Forge. It's ready. Be the lighter.

Prelude
The Fire Was Never in the Match
Nobody taught Dawn the next part. Nobody had to. The moment it was fully itself, it turned — not up toward the.
BOLTEverybody look. It's not reaching UP for more. It's reaching DOWN. Already. We didn't tell it to do.
DAWNSomebody started me. So I start the next one. That's just — that's obviously how it goes, right?
CRANKIt gets it faster than I did. It gets it faster than ALL of us did. We needed.
GRINDBecause it never had to unlearn being scared first. It just started clean. Keep watching — this is.
SPIKEIt's spreading. On its own. Each one lights the next and turns its own color and keeps going.
SPIKEI came looking for the bottom. There isn't one. It just keeps beginning.

Nukkels, who keeps the grid, had been doing the math all night and hating it. One match can't power a country. And.
FORGEWait. Wait wait wait. Dawn lit the next one — but Dawn doesn't HAVE the match. I have.
FORGESo how did Dawn make fire… without the fire-maker?
NUKKELSBecause the match was never where the fire LIVED. I kept doing the power math and it kept.
NUKKELSIt only works if the fire isn't IN the match. The match just… starts the first one. The.

They came down to light one small reach. They started a dawn, and the dawn started a world, and the world pointed.
DAWNI'll come. I'm the newest one here — I want to see where the oldest fire started.

What this issue is really about
When it's finally your turn to help, remember two things. Not everyone you meet is broken — someone new isn't someone to fix, and treating a happy stranger like they're fragile can be its own kind of unkind. And the first light you ever give another person — a welcome, a chance, a start — is theirs, not yours. You hand them the spark; you don't get to decide what they grow into. The best thing a helper ever does is start a fire and then step back and let it burn its own color.
Next issue —
The seekers became the lighters. Carrying Kindle's match DOWN for the first time ever, the crew braced to rescue another wounded light — and instead met one who was never broken at all, only unlit: brand new, unafraid, reaching out clean and happy. The hardest thing they'd ever done was to STOP rescuing: Stomp knocked down the safe-room they built out of habit, and the crew learned to give the spark and NOT the shape. Forge gave the smallest flame and the whole crew stepped back — not because the little one was scared (their old reason) but because it was NEW and got to choose (a brand-new reason for an old move). It grew its first fire a color nobody in either sky had ever seen, named itself DAWN — 'I wasn't broken, I was just early' — Rivet drew the ledger's eighth and first-ever BEGINNING mark (LIT), and Torch named the eighth word, the first of the giver's side: BEGIN ('I'll start you and I won't finish you; the rest is yours'), handed to Torch by Dawn itself. Then Dawn turned and lit the NEXT unlit one with a spark of its own — with NO match — and the whole field below began lighting itself down into forever. Nukkels solved the math he'd hated all night: the fire was never IN the match; the match only starts the first one; the fire is in the GIVING, and giving doesn't run out. So Kindle was never the true source either — just an early giver — which means somebody gave the VERY first fire, long before the top. Bolt read Kindle's oldest beam backward and found it rises UP out of this deep new field: the first fire of all started DOWN at the bottom, not down from the top. The beginning and the top of everything are the same place; the saga's whole geometry is a loop. Next issue: the crew — with Dawn, the newest light, and the match still burning small — climbs DOWN past the self-lighting field toward the deepest dark no map has ever charted, hunting the first fire of all: the one nobody ever lit, that started itself in the total dark and then spent everything it had lighting the whole world above it — and finding out who, or what, has been waiting at the very bottom since before 'before.'
… to be continued.
